Quabbin Cemetery

Ware, Massachusetts

These photos were taken May 23, 2004.  Quabbin Cemetery is a strange place to be. It sits beside Quabbin reservoir, which was created in 1939 by destroying and flooding the towns of Dana, Enfield, Prescott and Greenwich. The cemeteries located in the towns were also destroyed, the bodies and stones removed and transplanted here. But whomever laid the new stones did so in a most unruly and haphazard way. Stones are facing frontwards and backwards. Rows of stones lay back to back.

One of the statuary monuments

Another view of haphazard layout.

This stone shows a bible, but the predomintaing themes among the old stones of Quabbin are urns and willows

A row of back to back stones. Back to back stones.

More strange placement. Different stone styles, back to back, with the slate stones facing the opposite direction.

A moss covered monument sits uncomfortably

Emiline's slate stone is very well  preserved.
To weep for me my closest friends refrain

With Christ in heaven we all shall meet again

Entombed in silence death has closed my eyes

My chest shall sleep till Jesus bids it rise

Our tuneful lips forever close

Our circling blood congeals

Our swelling ____ obtain repose

And death his ___reveals

Here sleeping in his parent ground

a tender husband, Father lies

Till the arch angels Trump shall sound

When in immortal bloom he'll rise
